My Everything

By Ashley

Chapter 1

(July 25, 2002)

From behind the tinted windows of the black car, New York city looked like a very gloomy place, but maybe that was just the windows. She tilted her brown, blond streaked hair to one side, and looked up at the tall building above her, all the people moving along the streets beside the building didn't seem to notice it anymore. It had been there so long that they didn't take the time to notice it anymore.

There were way too many people in New York she decided, it was scary to her, but maybe that was just because she was naturally shy, and didn't like lots of people around her. Not many people were paying attention to the dark car as it moved through traffic, (very slowly) and she wondered why, she knew she would have loved to know who was in the car, had she not been the one in it. She felt someone touch her shoulder, and she turned to look at her best friend, who was watching her curiously. Her brown eyes asking if she was okay.

"I"m fine Britney." Ashley answered, without the girl even having to ask the question.
"I was just wondering." She said, smiling at her reply. "We are almost home."
"Yeah, I know. It's good to be this close."
"I have to agree. But it will still be a few more days until we get to go home."
"Yeah." Ashley agreed with a sad smile, remembering the line she had written, what seemed a long time ago, 'She leaves for her room, not home, never home. Home is no more than a word to her.' That's so true now, she thought.

"Miss Spears, we are almost there." The driver said from his position.
"Thanks." Britney answered.

Ashley looked out the window at the building they were approaching, one of the nicest Motels in all of New York, where they would be staying for the next few nights.

Ashley followed Britney into her room, her room was next door, but she would rather be with Britney right now, not alone in her room. Britney opened the door, and on the table were 3 dozen pink roses.

"How sweet!!!" She squealed, and she read the note.

Hey Pinky, if your reading this, it means your in New York, and that means that you are in the same country as me again. Do you know how much better that makes me feel just knowing that??? I hope I'll see you soon, and be safe.
~Justin.

"Look Ash." Britney handed her the note, and Ashley quickly read it.
"That's sweet. Have you talked to him today?"
"No, not yet. Have you talked to Lance?"
Ashley looked over at Britney with a look that said drop it, "No, I haven't talked to him today."
"Or all week?" Britney pushed it.
"No."
"Well, they are busy. You'll talk to him soon."

She sat down on the bed and flipped MTV on. Just then Felicia and Maitlyn walked in. Felicia was staying in the same room with Britney, but Ashley knew that Maitlyn was there for her.

"Hey Fe, hey Maitlyn."
"Little Miss Ashley, you need to do your school work." Maitlyn told her.
"Why!?" Ashley whined. "I'm tired Maitlyn."
"You can't be tired, you two girls slept the whole 12 hours on the flight." Felicia said.
"Fe!!!" Ashley whined at her for blowing her cover.
"Don't blame Fe, I saw you sleeping too, so head into your room." Maitlyn pointed toward the door.
"Britney! Save me!" Ashley turned to her last hope, who's eyes were glued to the TV, where Justin just happened to be talking.
"Oh I give up!" Ashley said in defeat, heading to the room that she and Maitlyn would share.
"Have fun!" Britney called after her.

Ashley was watching the clouds float lazily across the sky while Maitlyn talked about something or other that she knew she would never remember later, even if she was listening.

"Huh?" She asked when she realized Maitlyn was waiting for her to answer something.
"Are you listening Ashley?"
"No." she admitted truthfully.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing really. It's just that if I was at home, I would be having summer break, and doing stuff with my friends." She shrugged, "I'm just thinking about some things, I guess."
"Or some one?" Maitlyn asked her with a smile.
"Why does everyone just assume I'm thinking about Lance!"
"Ha! See, I never said Lance, that was you."
"Okay! So I was thinking about him. So what!?" Ashley glared stubbornly at Maitlyn, daring her to challenge anything she said.
"He hasn't called you all week has he."
"No." Ashley groaned miserably and put her head down on the table. "He called me everyday on tour." She mumbled.
"Maybe he's been busy." Maitlyn suggested.
"Maybe he has a new girlfriend." She mumbled again through her arms.
"Maybe."

Ashley's head shot up at Maitlyn's suggestion.

Maitlyn just laughed, "I'm kidding. I'm sure he has a good reason for not talking to you all week. Have you tried to call him?"
"No." Ashley admitted.
"Okay then, see it's not just his fault. Maybe he wants you to call him for a change."
"I can't do that."

Maitlyn gave her a sympathetic smile, but it was Ashley's own fault that she was shy.

"Well, then you'll just have to be miserable Ash."
"I already am miserable." Ashley said with her head back down on the table.
"Then call him. I promise that if you tell him how you feel, you'll feel better."
"Well I don't know how I feel!"

Maitlyn knew exactly what she meant, she felt exactly the same about JC; only that she and JC also weren't talking.

"I think I can help you there, but you have to be willing to accept an assignment from me."
"What kind of assignment?"

Ashley put her head up so she was looking at Maitlyn, but rested her chin on her folded arms.

"I want you to write me a poem."
"I write poems all the time Maitlyn. And I don't see how that will help me with Lance." Ashley told her doubtfully.
"I don't want you to write the poem right now, later, when you are ready; I want you to put some thought into it."
"What do you mean?" Ashley asked, intrigued by this assignment.
"I want you, to write a poem about YOU. Your feelings. Just you. I know you are an amazing writer, but you never write about you. I want you to put something of you in your writing. It will make it mean that much more to you in the end."
"I guess I can try." Ashley accepted the assignment. "But what about Lance?"
"Is that all you ever think about Ashley?" Maitlyn teased her; but at the look on Ashley's face, she stopped her laughing. "Ashley, I know you are shy, and you don't want to call Lance, but I think that just like you need Lance to be there for you and call you; he wants the same thing. But I also think that Lance knows you are shy, and he will wait for you. It's up to you how long your going to make him wait. The poem is how to sort out your feelings; not your problems."
"Sometime." Ashley shrugged.
"What?" Maitlyn asked, lost at her suggestion.
"Britney's song 'Sometimes'." Ashley looked out the window as she spoke again. "Sometimes I run, sometimes I hide, sometimes I'm scared of you. But all I really want is to hold you tight, treat you right, be with you day and night. Baby all I need is time."
Maitlyn shrugged, "Yeah, that's what I meant."
"That's it Maitlyn!!!!" Ashley jumped up and ran over to her bed and started digging through her bag. "Your amazing!!"
"I know. . . .What did I say?" Maitlyn asked, lost to what she was 'amazing' for.
"My song, his song. . . You know!"
"Oh yeah, your song thing."

Maitlyn remembered Ashley and Lance's 'thing' that they did. Calling each other everyday and giving them a song.

Ashley sat on her bed with her cell phone in hand.

"Should I call him?" She asked Maitlyn desperately.
Maitlyn held up her hands, "I can't tell you what to do, this is between the two of you."

Ashley sighed and slowly dialed the familiar number and waited for the phone to ring.

"Hey this is Lance, I can't answer my phone right now, but leave a message and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Bye!"

Ashley glared at the phone and Maitlyn laughed at her face.

"Stupid voice mail." She cursed the phone before she put it back to her ear; instantly brightening her voice. "Hi Lance, it's Ash. I guess your not by your phone, but I remembered that I never gave you your song. It's Britney Spears 1,3. Talk to ya later." At least she hoped she would.

Ashley was lying on her stomach on her bed, a notebook open in front of her as she tapped her pencil ideally on it. Suddenly she ripped the top paper out and tossed it across the room at the garbage can, it didn't make it, but then none of the other tries had either; and they laid in a pile all around the garbage can.

Maitlyn opened the door just in time to see her latest miss.

"Something wrong?" She asked Ashley.
"I can't do it Maitlyn," She complained. "I can't write a poem about me."
Maitlyn shook her head with a slight laugh, "You can't, because your trying. You can't TRY to be yourself, you just are. You can't do this in a day Ashley, it's going to take a lot of thought. I know it's hard to write about yourself, but you can do it. Just stop trying so hard. Besides, I have something that might take your mind off of it."
"What?" Ashley asked sitting up on her bed.
Maitlyn motioned her head in the direction of the door, "Why don't you go see."
"Whatever." Ashley sighed, but she slid off the bed and went to open the door. She pulled open the door, and out on the floor stood a vase filled with originally white roses, but now dyed baby blue.

"Where did these come from?!"
Maitlyn shrugged, "Why don't you read the card."

Ashley picked the flowers off the floor and carried them into her room before she closed the door, she pulled out the card, but on it was only a short message.

16 Roses.

Ashley rased her eyes and counted them; there were 16 baby blue roses.

"They're from Lance." She said not really to anyone in particular.
"Well, I didn't expect them to be from Justin." Maitlyn said sarcastically. "Why 16?"
"Tomorrow is my birthday." Ashley told her.
"Ah yes, Sweet 16." Maitlyn smiled. "And now that you are 16, you can date, and I'm guessing that's what Lance was waiting for. . . .And what you've been waiting for."
Ashley gave a shy smile, "I wouldn't say no. . .If he asked me anyway."
"He will," Maitlyn assured her.

Ashley was sprawled out on one of the beds in Britney's room as the two of them were watching the TV. Britney had dragged her into the room about an hour ago to watch 'Model Behaviour' with her. She had laughed at Britney when she buried her head in a pillow when 'Jason' or Justin had kissed, Janine, Alex, or whatever you want to call her, but then again Ashley knew she would feel the same way.

As Ashley fought to stay away through the movie she had already memorized, her cell phone ringing 'Oops! I Did it Again' penetrated her half sleeping state.

"Ashley answer that phone! This is the good part!" Britney told her with her eyes glued to the TV.

Ashley shook her head and walked through the connecting door to her room as she answered her phone.

"Hello?"
"Hi Ash." She smiled at the sound of his voice.
"Hey Lance. Thanks for the flowers!" She said as her eyes fell on the roses in her room.
"They're for your birthday. And speaking of your birthday, what are you doing tomorrow?"
"Um. . .nothing during the day." She didn't mention that she had purposely planed it that way.
"Good, cause I have something planned for tomorrow, and we're all flying up to New York in the morning. I'll be there at noon. Will that be okay?"
"Yes." She answered, "I'll be ready."
"I'll see you then." She could hear the smile in his voice when he spoke. "Oh, and Ashley, I got your message, and you can have all the time you need."
Ashley smiled, "Thank you."
"Bye Ash."
"Bye."

She was about to hang up when she heard her name again.

"Yeah?" She asked putting the phone back up to her ear.
"On The Line, 9."
"I thought you forgot." She told him.
"I would never forget. Bye Ashley."

Ashley hung up her phone, forgetting all about watching the movie with Britney as she put her 'On The Line' Soundtrack in her CD player, and repeating number nine, before she climbed into bed.

The chorus penetrated her dreams throughout the night as she slept.

I get a feeling, whenever your eyes meet mine. My heart spins in circles, and I lose all space in time. And now that we're standing face to face, something tells me it's gonna be okay. And I'm ready to fall in love tonight. Ready to hold my heart open wide. I can't promise forever, but baby I'll try. Yes I'm ready to fall in love tonight.
